Through the schemes of the gap year/summer camp/immersion, young people get an opportunity to focus on their interest and develop their unique potential. The experience of living and learning in a truly democratic community helps them develop the skills to become aware of and committed to collective efforts to deal with the global challenges we face and will face in the future.

Living in a multicultural and scientifically-challenging environment intends to motivate young people’s creativity, respect and proactive attitudes in order to become leaders in their respective countries.

I support PANKA, I hope you will do it too!

Today learning is based on solving problems by trying to find the right questions and creating answers to those questions. PANKA is all about that.

Finland has a reputation for being in the forefront of educational change. So Panka Academy is a welcome addition to this approach. It is one of the most important new innovative schools in the 21st century. It has the potential to have a dramatic effect on some of the most vexing issues now facing humanity. Students who are fortunate enough to go there are preparing to have a real impact on the world.

With the growing realisation of the urgency with which the problems confronting the world need to be addressed it is encouraging that there are an increasing number of centres taking these issues seriously. At the University level there is the Centre for International Studies at Oxford, the Confronting Global Challenges 2017-2067 at the LSE in London, the Global Challenges course at Brunel, and the well established Global Studies department at Utrecht amongst many others. At the secondary education level there is the partnership between the IB (International Baccalaureate) and SDSN (Sustainable Development Solutions Network) Youth and Global School Programme with their ‘#generation IB’ project. These are all successful and commendable.

But there is something quite unique about PANKA which has a direct and powerful synergy with the Climate Change School Strike movement that is sweeping the world inspired by the Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg. This is the democratic bottom-up student led approach to the learning that will take place in the Finnish Centre where students of various ages and nationalities will direct their own learning in a self-governing community. Students and staff will work together on the principle of ‘one person one vote.’ This will offer a Vygotskyan aspect of ’tool as result’ to the programme where students will already be practising an aspect of their solutions to global issues though the management of their everyday lives in the Centre.

A passionate young activist named Greta has been in news this year. That’s too rare news: world needs more sparking ideas of young people. Thanks to PANKA, finding those ideas will be possible for everyone.

And it’s a globally connected school deep in the woods of Finland? Sounds like fresh thinking – and a great experience.

Our planet does face a few massive, truly global challenges. The humanity bears responsibility for most of them. We, adults can not just enjoy our lives mindlessly and pass on these growing problems to the later generations. We, ourselves must take practical actions. Now.

Still, some of the biggest challenges will be on humans’ agenda for many years to come. Our kids, at the very least, need to have good understanding of them and, ideally, to be able to take practical actions. PANKA’s mission is to give them a good opportunity to do so. I am personally delighted to be on board of this project and will be happy to help.

With the recent IPCC report stating we’ve not much more than a decade to make the crucial decisions required to reverse climate breakdown, democratic schools such as Panka Academy based on action learning have an absolutely crucial role to play.

The school will show how youth led initiatives can lead to tangible solutions to real problems within our communities and is a model that can be scaled up globally.
